Stewie’s International Adventures

2021 December - 2022 January

Created by Charlotte 2 years ago
From the very beginning Stewie (before he was called Stewie) was with us for a some big international adventures. Whilst at 6 weeks he may have been at the very early stages of being, he certainly made his presence known with all sorts of treats like nausea, insomnia, extreme tiredness and never before experienced car and sea sickness.

But these ‘treats’ aside, making this trip as a trio helped us collect the most incredible and treasured memories from the earliest days that we knew we were going to become a family of 3 (well 5 if you include the cats).

Over two months we went to Dubai (a covid necessity to have as our in between stop over), Sri Lanka, the Maldives and Thailand. There were so many amazing experiences and thousands of photos that we still have to go through, but these are just some of the most memorable moments and photos.

- The start of the Guessing Game at 6 weeks pregnant over breakfast in Dubai
- Dozens of tuk tuk trips from the streets of Colombo and Bangkok to the roadless hills of the Sri Lankan countryside
- Extreme enjoyment of roti and other Sri Lankan food which was very quickly turned into an extreme aversion of it
- Whale watching in the Laccidave Sea, Marissa, Sri Lanka which was great fun for Adam and the most nauseating experience of all time for Charlotte (see photo evidence). This was also the first time we realised that pregnancy induced sea sickness is a thing - a great shame considering how much we love boats
- Snorkelling and Adam learning to surf (quite well!) in Galle, Sri Lanka
- A textile factory tour where we got to see weaving and dyeing in action and purchase beautiful clothes and fabrics - very important for Stewie to get an early experience of his mum’s main interest
- A safari in Yala National Park, Sri Lanka where we shared our luxurious accommodation with two scorpions (it was fine they were removed with the national multi tool of choice, a single strap sandal). While out on safari drives we saw leopards, elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, and a whole range of other animals - this experience inspired us to have a subtle safari theme for Stewie’s nursery. Alongside seeing incredible wildlife, we were treated to delicious local food and the best hosts imaginable.
- A week in the Maldives which became a sort of official honeymoon as well as a place to celebrate Adam’s 41st birthday and Christmas, and the first time on our trip we could guarantee finding pregnancy friendly food at every meal
- Adam enjoying his final day of 40 powered by Cava (they kept giving us free bottles), and being called Mr. Pina Colada by the time we left. He had a wonderful time
- Swimming with reef sharks on our private patch of Maldives beach
- All the food in Thailand (apart from our first quarantine ‘food’ that was delivered to our room. A fork couldn’t even penetrate the sausages, to this day we don’t know what we were given). We went on food tours, cooking classes, ate food from carts, car park ‘restaurants’ and the most well known establishments- it was all delicious
- Celebrating New Year’s Eve in Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand with street food and fireworks
- Meeting elephants and walking through the jungle with them for ‘bathtime’. They could sense Stewie which was fun, and Adam got to have a bucket list experience. There was a particularly enthusiastic baby elephant who was keen to play at all times - Charlotte’s efforts to hide behind trees were understood as a game so of limited success
- Staying on an organic farm in Chiang Rai and doing natural dyeing and egg pickling. The results of the natural dyeing were potentially going to be turned into something fun for Stewie though that hadn’t been decided yet
- Exploring the Thai hillsides, walking over rickety bridges and finding beautiful waterfalls
- Kayaking through mangroves and trying to avoid monkeys jumping in with us
- Chartering a 2 day boat trip with Captain Alejandro to explore some of the islands and lagoons of West Thailand and the Andaman Sea
- Visiting markets on canals and railways, temples, beaches, farms, islands, and all sorts in between

It was the most incredible two months, made even better by being able to share it with Stewie.
